Christmas gifts I made - trivets

These are simple to make & a very practical gift! I use mine every day. Since wool is insulated, the heat doesn't come through. One of my favorite uses for these is holding a hot bowl of soup on my lap while on the computer or couch without having to worry about getting burned. I used a pie tin as a template for the circles, and pinking shears to cut, then sewed them together, & added a loop for hanging up.

Obviously these are not trivets, but I wanted to sneak it in somewhere. I made this hat & mittens set for a friend's baby that just turned one. I was really happy at how it turned out.

Those trivets are really nice. I have a busy sweater that I felted but didn't know what to do with. I think I'll make these.

You have so many awesome ideas, I'm jealous! I have a wool peacoat that I have no idea what to do with, so maybe a trivet or two will fit the bill. Good job on the baby gifts, too cute!

Excellent idea! I hadn't thought of using pinking sheers to cut around the edges.

oh these are wonderful kris!

do you have a tutorial you could share on how you maek them?

I didn't use a tutorial, and forgot to take pictures as I made them, but they are pretty easy to figure out. There were lots of variances too. Some of the loops are braided seams (i'm always looking for ways to use the seams!), and some are just strips cut with pinking shears. The sewn spiral pattern was super easy... just keep turning the trivet in a circle until you reach the middle.

these are really cool! how many layers do you use? have you tried sweaters that are not 100% wool?

Thanks! I like to use 2 layers for both the thickness, and for the 2 tone look. Yes, I use blends too. I tend to use mostly 100%, but have used some blends of 70% & up natural fiber.

I know this is an older posting, but just discovered it and right this moment have a stack of felted wool cut from old sweaters - Bingo! Handmade Xmas gifts for my girls!!! Thank you for the easy-for-me to accomplish craft...

Dawn, i'm so glad you could use this idea so many years later! I need to get sewing again, so I can come up with some new ideas!
